LCN is the leading manufacturer of door closers and door control devices in the USA. One of their most popular products is the LCN 4040XP door closer. In this article we go over step by step instructions on how to install the LCN 4040XP PA door closer.
Step 1: Utilize The Template
Each LCN 4040XP door closer comes with an installation sticker template. An LCN 4040XP can be mounted in variety of ways including top jamb push side, parallel arm mount, and pull side. Locate the template labeled "180 Degree Template P.A. Mounting" and remove the sticker and apply it to the door. Center punch all hole locations and drill 1/8" pilot holes. It is important that you utilize the correct sticker template. If you do not have the sticker template it can be downloaded at the LCN manufacturer's website. These door closer templates are vital to the correct operation of the door closer. If the door closer is mounted in the incorrect position it will effect the geometry of the door closer, causing it to not open or close properly.
Step 2: Determine The Correct Spring Power For Your Door Size
The LCN 4040XP door closer is one of the most versatile door closers on the market due to it's adjustable spring power. For this installation we need to determine the appropriate spring size for your door. Please refer to the illustration below.
Step 3: Securing The LCN 4040XP Door Closer To The Door
Screw in the valve on the back of the door closer. Then using the pilot holes you drilled in step 1, attach the door closer to the door with the fasteners provided.
Step 4: Preload The Door Closer
Preload the door closer to 30 degrees as shown on the illustration below. This can be done with an adjustable crescent wrench.
Step 5: Installing the Parallel Arm Bracket
Using the fasteners provided with the LCN 4040XP door closer, attach the parallel arm bracket to the door frame. With arm preloaded to 30 degrees, attach the arm to the parallel arm bracket.
Step 6: Fine Tune The Door Closer
Test out the door closer. Open the door and analyze the speed at which it closes. Based on the chart in step 2, the door closer should be adjusted to the right spring power. There are 4 valves for 4 adjustments.
Backcheck Control Adjustment
Valve 1 is the backcheck, this controls the speed at the last few inches before the door reaches full open.
Main Closing Speed Control Adjustment
Valve 2 is the Main Speed Close Control Adjustment. This is essentially the closing speed of the door.
Latch Speed Control Adjustment
Valve 3 is the latch speed. This is the speed at the last few inches before the door is in the full close position.
Delay Speed Control Adjustment
Valve 4 is the Delay Speed Adjustment. This adjustment controls the hold open delay of the door closer. In other words once the door is opened, there will be a slight delay before the door begins to close. This feature is great for high traffic doors.
As a rule of thumb, a normal closing time from when the door is in the 90 degree full open position is 5 to 7 seconds, evenly divided between the main closing speed and the latch speed. Important note: when adjusting the valves be sure to only turn the valve about 1/8 of turn at a time. Never fully close or fully open the valves. If the valves are open too far, hydraulic fluid will leak out of the LCN 4040XP destroying the door closer. Likewise, if the 4 valves are completely closed off, it will build up too much pressure within the closer body bursting the seals, causing hydraulic fluid to leak from the closer body and ruining the door closer.
Step 7: Install The Cover
The clip attaches to the cylinder of the LCN 4040XP door closer body. The cover snaps onto the clip for a secure attachment. If the cover is metal, then it attaches with fasteners and an allen key from the top.
